‘‘The crowds would come pouring out into the pubs after the match’’
1979 - The Angel Ground
Once the towns cricket ground, this hallowed turf was home to Tonbridge FC between 1948-1980. The football club took their name from ‘The Angel Hotel’ a lost pub and hotel which once stood on the corner of Vale Road and The High Street. The Angels played here until an eviction notice was served to make way for the arrival of Sainsbury’s, Bentalls and The Angel Centre. The last player to score at this end of Tonbridge was the aptly named Micky Angel. Listen to Anne Clement recount her memories of the Angel ground.
